VileEffigy This album takes some effort to appreciate at first, but you'll be more than pleased if you make that effort. Buy it if you want an album that you'll enjoy for many years to come. One of the best things I've gotten into in a long time personally and I'm looking forward to more from these guys. Favorite track: Holenmuur.

xhrl_ Kaeck keeps the melodic centre to songs & uses it to enhance their savage riffs, giving the songs structure. As well, the vocalist layers vocals to produce both texture & melody to complement the raging guitars. Stormkult has an otherworldly feel that descends into untamed chaos & then emerges on the other side victoriously. Kaeck’s songwriting taps into melancholy & rage & alienation coupled with a warlike desire to set things right. Kaeck reminds the BM world of its inherent nature. Battle! Favorite track: Akolieten van de nacht.

This LP will confuse some. It has some blackened touches but it doesn't delve into any placid atmospheres. Rather it is music for battling and about warfare and death-struggles. This Dutch band pounds the drums in an Orc-like, violent manner. The warfare is non-stop and unrelenting. In a way it mirrors the life of a spiritual warrior. The pounding channels the guitars, which alternate between abrupt chromatic confrontation (e.g., Demoncy) and gentle unfolding melodies. Superb BM! xhrl_

Given Jarno's pedigree you'd think this would be a regular Finnish death metal album. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Serpent Ascending's exploration of the occult make it wholly unique. Choco Latte
